Guangdong Factory Audit Guide: What Auditors Actually Check On Site
Guangdong is China's manufacturing heart for home appliances. But a factory address and a nice showroom tell you almost nothing. A proper on-site audit is the only way to find out whether the factory can actually make your product, to your quality, at the promised volume.
The five pillars of a factory audit
- Production capability: equipment, capacity, bottlenecks, and whether the lines match the products they claim to make.
- Quality system: incoming inspection, in-process checks, final QC, and whether procedures are followed or only framed on the wall.
- Social compliance: working hours, wages, safety, dormitory and canteen conditions — the areas that trigger failed buyer audits and media exposure.
- Facility and environment: fire safety, ventilation, waste handling, and general housekeeping. Housekeeping is a surprisingly reliable proxy for management discipline.
- Financial and business health: years in business, ownership changes, existing customers, and (where visible) whether orders are actually being produced.
How the day typically runs
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| Morning | Document review: licenses, certificates, QC records, compliance files |
| Midday | Production floor walk-through with photo evidence |
| Afternoon | Line sampling, worker interviews (where permitted), closing meeting with management |
| Post-visit | Written report with photos, findings and a pass/conditional/fail recommendation |
Red flags auditors look for
- The "two factories" pattern: a clean showroom floor and a separate, older production area.
- Certificates that expire next month or carry a different legal entity name.
- Management that cannot explain basic QC records — the records were made to be shown, not used.
- Sudden claims of huge capacity with no visible production activity.
Reading the report
Don't just file the audit. Compare the findings against what you were promised, decide which findings are blockers for your order and which are negotiable, and follow up on the action items with the factory in writing. An audit is a starting point for a conversation, not a certificate of forever.
