One of the least discussed realities of sourcing in China is how much time travel eats. The Pearl River Delta looks compact on a map — and the cities are close — but road traffic makes travel times unpredictable. Here is how to plan factory audit days that actually work.

How many audits fit in a day
- Two audits are realistic only if they are in the same city or a short corridor apart (e.g. Zhongshan morning + Shunde afternoon).
- One deep audit per day is the norm for thorough work — a rushed audit misses what it is paid to find.
- Never plan an audit and a flight departure on the same day without a big buffer.
Practical trip planning
- Base yourself where the most factories are: Guangzhou or Zhongshan cover most appliance clusters.
- Confirm the factory address and a contact who answers the phone before you leave — addresses in China are often imprecise.
- Book drivers or taxis with an hour of slack; app taxis are reliable in the PRD.
- Carry factory ID documents, a power bank and your checklist printed — some factory floors have poor signal.
