BSCI, SMETA or SA8000: Which Social Compliance Audit Do You Need?
If you sell to European retailers or marketplaces, "social compliance" will eventually appear in your supplier requirements. For buyers new to China sourcing, the alphabet soup — BSCI, SMETA, SA8000, SEDEX, WCA — is confusing. Here is what each one means in practice.
The main schemes at a glance
| Scheme | Who runs it | Typical trigger | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSCI | amfori (importers/retailers) | EU retailer supplier code | A–E rating, shared on the platform |
| SMETA | SEDEX (brands/multi-sector) | UK/EU brands' ethical trade | Report shared with SEDEX members |
| SA8000 | SAI (certification body) | Premium/commitment-driven buyers | Full certification, 3-year cycle |
| WCA | Intertek | US retailers (Walmart etc.) | Score-based report |
What auditors actually check
- Working hours and rest days against local law (China: 40-hour week standard, overtime limits).
- Minimum wage and timely payment — payslips, bank records and worker interviews.
- Child labour and forced labour controls, including age records at hiring.
- Health and safety: fire exits, extinguishers, machine guards, PPE, dormitory and canteen conditions.
- Freedom of association and grievance mechanisms.
Common first-audit failures
In our experience the most common failures are not child labour or forced labour — they are paperwork and housekeeping: missing time records, unpaid overtime, expired fire extinguishers, blocked fire exits, and workers who do not know their rights or the grievance channel. These are all fixable, but not overnight.
How to prepare a factory
- Run a pre-audit gap check 4–6 weeks before the official audit.
- Fix the physical items first: fire safety, exits, machine guards, PPE.
- Sort payroll and time records; correct practices beat correcting documents.
- Train workers on the basics before the auditor's interviews.
- Have one manager own the audit file and keep it updated — audits are increasingly unannounced or semi-announced.
The honest view
A social audit does not guarantee ethical perfection — it verifies compliance at a point in time. But for most buyers it is a necessary gate to enter reputable retail channels, and a well-prepared factory gets through it far more cheaply than an unprepared one.
