Inspecting Home Appliances in China: Air Fryer QC Checklist
Air fryers are one of the most-shipped appliances from the Pearl River Delta, and one of the most returned. Most returns trace back to a handful of failure points that a decent QC checklist catches before loading.
The 5 places air fryers actually fail
- Basket coating — non-stick coating that peels after a few uses, often because the coating layer is too thin or the pre-treatment is skipped. Check coating thickness (where possible), adhesion and the absence of scratches at the factory.
- Temperature accuracy — the displayed temperature vs. actual chamber temperature can drift by 20–30°C on cheap units. We run a heating test and compare set vs. actual at 180°C and 200°C.
- Safety interlocks — the unit must cut power when the basket is removed mid-cooking. This is a critical safety point for UL/GS certification; a bypassed or weak interlock fails any serious inspection.
- Timer & control panel — buttons that register double-presses or a display that dies after minutes of use. Sample-test every inspected unit's full control cycle.
- Plugs & voltage variants — EU, UK, US, AU plugs and 220V/110V variants mixed in the same batch is a classic error. Verify plug type and rating against the destination market for every carton sampled.
Our standard air fryer checklist
- Packaging: carton, insert foam, manual language and barcode match the market.
- Appearance: body, basket, handle; no scratches, gaps or discoloration.
- Heating test: set to 200°C, verify chamber temperature within tolerance and no overheating of the housing.
- Safety: interlock cuts power when basket removed; auto shut-off at timer end.
- Controls: every button, the display, and the beeper if specified.
- Accessories: basket, racks, recipe book (if promised) present and correct.
- Cosmetics: logo placement, label alignment, CE/UKCA/UL marks and ratings correct.
Sampling and test intensity
We sample per AQL 2.5 (typically 125 units from a 3,000–10,000 pcs batch) for the visual checks, and run the full functional heating test on a smaller sub-sample (usually 5 units) because heating tests take time. Any critical safety failure fails the whole batch — do not negotiate that one.
What buyers most often miss
- Manual language and legal marks for the destination market (often discovered only at customs).
- Mixed plug types in one batch (the factory "ran out" of UK plugs and substituted EU).
- Coating defects that only appear after first use — visible at inspection if you look for scratches and adhesion on the inner wall.
