Container Loading Inspection: The Last Check Before Your Goods Sail
Most buyers know about pre-shipment inspection. Fewer realise that the container loading is where the final — and often most costly — risks are realised: wrong goods, wrong quantities, mixed batches, or damage hidden until the container is sealed.
Why a separate loading check exists
Pre-shipment inspection usually happens days before loading, on a sample of finished goods. Loading inspection happens at the dock or factory yard on the actual cartons being loaded. The two catch different problems:
- PSI catches product quality problems.
- Loading catches quantity, packaging, mixing and handling problems.
What the inspector checks at loading
- Carton count against the packing list — verified carton by carton, not estimated.
- Carton condition: no crushed, wet or re-taped cartons; print and model codes match the order.
- Batch mixing: confirm all cartons contain the ordered model — no "we packed some of the previous order" surprises.
- Load sequence and bracing: heavy cartons at the bottom, proper air bags and lashing, no overloading beyond the container's limit.
- Seal: correct seal number recorded and photographed, applied after loading completes.
The loading report
A good loading report includes the container and seal numbers, a carton count tally, photos of the interior during loading (front, middle, rear), and any issues found. Keep it on file — if a claim arises at destination, the loading photos are the strongest evidence of what actually left the factory.
Common mistakes
- Letting the loading pass with only the factory's own tally.
- Checking cartons before loading but not watching the actual load sequence.
- Forgetting that short-shipping (loading fewer cartons than invoiced) is the easiest fraud to commit and the hardest to prove later.
Cost and timing
A loading inspection in the Pearl River Delta is usually arranged with a few days' notice and is priced per container. For high-value orders it is one of the cheapest insurance policies in your supply chain.
