Robot Vacuum QC: The Defect Categories We See Most
Robot vacuums are complex enough that generic inspection checklists miss the failures that actually reach customers. Based on our inspection records, here are the defect categories we encounter most often — in rough order of frequency.
1. Navigation and mapping failures
Units that fail to map the room, lose their position, or circle in one spot. Causes range from poorly calibrated LiDAR to firmware not matching the hardware. Check: run an obstacle-course test with the shipping firmware; repeat after a battery disconnect.
2. Battery issues
Claimed runtime not reached, fast self-discharge, or battery swelling. Second-grade cells and mismatched BMS (battery management system) are common causes. Check: full charge/discharge cycle and a charging test with the supplied adapter.
3. Suction and brush performance
Rated suction not achieved, brushes that stall on carpet, or hair tangling that stops rotation within minutes. Check: measure suction on hard floor and low-pile carpet; run a hair-wrap test.
4. App and connectivity problems
The app fails to pair, drops connection, or the region settings block setup. This category is growing as products become more connected. Check: pair two units, test Wi-Fi setup, confirm the app and server work in the destination region.
5. Cosmetic defects
Scratches on the top cover, colour mismatch between bumper and body, misaligned assembly seams. Check: standard AQL visual inspection with good lighting.
6. Packaging and manual issues
Wrong language manual, missing accessories (docking station, filters, side brushes), damaged cartons. Check: packing list verification and carton condition at loading.
How to structure the inspection
- Split functional checks (navigation, battery, suction) from visual checks — they need different time and tools.
- Test at least a small number of units fully, even when the AQL sample is large — functional defects cluster.
- Photograph the app screen and serial numbers as evidence of what was tested.
- Agree defect definitions with the factory in writing before the inspection day.
