A small number of well-known ODMs build for multiple global brands, while dozens of smaller factories assemble from bought-in parts. The difference between them is rarely visible from a website — which is exactly why a physical audit matters.
Key components to verify
- Battery: certified cells (e.g. UL/UN38.3 for lithium), capacity matching the spec sheet, no second-grade cells.
- Navigation: LiDAR or camera-based; verify obstacle detection actually works — not just in the demo video.
- Suction motor: rated suction vs. actual suction; noise level against the CE/FCC limits for your market.
- Brush and roller: material quality and hair-tangle resistance — a top complaint driver.
- Dust bin and filter: seal quality; HEPA claims should match the filter actually fitted.
- App connectivity: which app is pre-loaded, which servers it uses, and whether it works in your region.
Certification reality check
Different markets require different marks: CE + RED for the EU, FCC + UL for the US (UL is voluntary but expected by major retailers), KC for South Korea, and PSE for Japan. Ask to see the certificates, then verify them with the issuing body — fake and borrowed certificates are common in this category. Also confirm the exact model number on the certificate matches the model you are buying; certificates are often shown for a similar model.
QC points that matter most
- Run a soak test on the battery (charge/discharge cycles) rather than a single charge.
- Test navigation on an obstacle course with the exact firmware that ships.
- Check for quality drift between the sample and mass production — a classic failure in this category.
